Personal troubles, collective solutions: how can new academics work together for a better future?

The day will give delegates the chance to meet other postgraduates and to tackle some of the issues central to academia, and will feature a number of interactive sessions that will be useful for everyone at every stage of their PhD. We will explore how we can work together for a better future in an increasingly precarious academy, and the day will feature sessions to help you develop the way you speak about your research, give you a chance to meet new people, and teach you different ways of thinking about dissemination of research. There will also be keynotes from Professor Kalwant Bhopal (University of Birmingham) who will talk about her work on race and academia and Professor Pat Thomson (University of Nottingham) who will be using her wealth of experience as a doctoral supervisor to tackle some of the most pertinent issues to delegates currently undertaking or writing up their doctoral research. We hope this day will be the ideal way to ease yourself into the BSA annual conference. If it is your first, we hope it will make it feel less daunting and if you are a seasoned attender we hope this will offer the chance to develop new lasting academic friendships and to learn about the research of others in a safe and supportive environment.
